1952 Eleanor GarfieldThe National Park Service staff of James A. Garfield National Historic Site is pleased to announce a new monthly walking tour of several blocks immediately surrounding the home and property of the twentieth President of the United States.  It will be held this Sunday, August 30 beginning at 10:30 a.m.  This special tour will be offered on the last Sunday of each month through October (August 30, September 27, and October 25).

This walking tour will travel a few blocks east and west of James A. Garfield National Historic Site.  It will feature a “then and now” look at the Garfield family’s neighborhood, using historic photos of Mentor Avenue and Center Street and modern views of historic landmarks along the way.  The tour will examine the connection between James A. Garfield National Historic Site and Eleanor B. Garfield Park, Mentor Public Library, Faith Lutheran Church, and the intersection of Mentor Avenue and Center Street.  The tour will last between 90 minutes and two hours and will require approximately 1.5 miles of walking.  Those interested in participating should be fully confident of their ability to walk 1.5 miles in warm or hot weather.

A maximum of 12 people may sign up for this tour; reservations are required and can be made by calling 440-255-8722.  Cost is $15 per person.  Participants must be at least 16 years old and must wear comfortable walking shoes (sandals and flip-flops are strongly discouraged).  Those attending are invited to bring along drinking water, sunscreen, and any other items needed for personal comfort or safety.  Umbrellas are welcomed in case of inclement weather; no tour will take place in the event of lightning.

James A. Garfield National Historic Site is located at 8095 Mentor Avenue (U.S. 20) in Mentor, Ohio, approximately 25 miles east of Cleveland.  The site offers guided tours of the Garfield home, museum exhibits, and an introductory film.  The National Park Service completely restored the house in the late 1990s, making it one of the most impressive presidential homes preserved for the public.  For information call (440) 255-8722, write 8095 Mentor Avenue, Mentor, OH 44060, or visit www.nps.gov/jaga on the Internet.  Find the site on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GarfieldNPS and follow the site on Twitter at www.twitter.com/GarfieldNPS.  Read the site’s blog at www.garfieldnps.wordpress.com.
