Senator EklundWe are feeling pretty honored here at the History Center today. This morning we received a visit from Senator John Eklund, and this afternoon we received accolades from Representative Ron Young and Representative John M. Rogers. What an impressive day we’re having!

Senator Eklund visited us as a first-time museum guest. He took our behind-the-scenes tour with Collections Manager, Lynn Vandevort, and even assisted with putting political buttons and Ohio Governor papers back into our collections. Executive Director, Elizabeth Connor, showed him the progress with our elevator project and toured the increased classroom spaces and future teacher resource center that the state appropriated funds are helping make possible. Construction on the elevator is slated to begin within the month.

Both Senator Eklund and the Ohio House of Representatives also recognized Lynn on her amazing progress with LCHS collections stewardship. In early 2015, Lynn was informed of our acceptance into the Museum Assessment Program of the American Alliance of Museums. This program takes an in-depth analysis of how we are doing with the storage, organization, and preservation of our collections. We are excited to have a site review this summer and hope to receive certification this year! If certified, we would join a very elite group of museums throughout the nation that show an overwhelming dedication to the stewardship of our collection. If deemed in need of more time, LCHS will have gotten expert advice on how to improve our storage and collections for their future preservation. This process is a learning curve, and taking the steps to complete it already shows above-average commitment.

On behalf of the members of the House of Representatives of the 131st General Assembly of Ohio, we are pleased to congratulate the Lake County History Center on being accepted into the Museum Assessment Program by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Since its inception, the Lake County History Center has striven to preserve and promote the unique history of the area, and this prestigious distinction is a fitting tribute to the institution for its efforts to improve operations and programming through the Museum Assessment Program, administered by the American Alliance of Museums. All those involved with the museum, including its executive director, Elizabeth Connor, and its trustees, staff, and volunteers, are to be commended for their tremendous efforts to ensure that the important details of our past are transmitted to succeeding generations for their reflection and appreciation.

In this modern era, in which the durability of goods and values is often measure in months and days rather than in years and decades, it is not only enlightening but also satisfying to discover that some representations of the past still stand for future generations as a record of, and a monument to, previous achievements. The Lake County History Center has certainly made a positive contribution to the surrounding area, maintaining the rich heritage of bygone days.

Thus, with genuine satisfaction, we applaud the Lake County History Center on its recent accolade and extend best wishes for ongoing success.
