IMG_4435 2019 “Behind the Scenes” Tours (Monthly)

Offered the 4th Thursday of the month, 7-8:30 pm. at the Lake County History Center 415 Riverside Dr., Painesville, OH.

The 143 year old structure which has been home to our Lake County Historical Society (LCHS) for over 10 years has a very colorful past and vital present! We would love to have you join us for one of our Behind the Scenes Tours which offers participants the opportunity to explore portions of our beautiful 37,000 square foot home that are generally not open to the public. During a tour you will:

  • learn of its long standing history as the Lake County Poor House which housed and cared for the poor and infirm of Lake County and hear some of their personal stories
  • learn how LCHS saved this beautiful, historic home from destruction and modified it for its own use
  • be the first to see artifacts that have not yet made it into our museum
  • gain an understanding of how present staff and volunteers fulfill the LCHS mission to collect, preserve and interpret our county’s rich history for future generations

2019 Haunted Lantern Tours (Monthly)

Offered the 2nd Thursday of the month, 8-9:30pm at the Lake County History Center 415 Riverside Dr., Painesville, OH.

February 14; March 14; April 11; May 9: June 13; July 11; August 8; September 12; October 10: November 14; December 12.

Do ghosts and spirits really haunt the former Lake County Poorhouse? Take our haunting evening tour where you’ll be able to experience the Lake County History Center after dark.

Come take a walk through the long dark corridors with nothing but a lanterns to illuminate the way. Escape into the past as our guides provide you with an eerie yet fun-filled adventure! You’ll visit all the locations around the Lake County History Center where shadows and ghostly figures are said to have been sighted. You’ll go to off-limits areas where many have reported hearing strange sounds and feeling unseen hands touch them.

You’ll hear stories of unbelievable historically documented events that have taken place in the past, including those in the infirmary and attic. Dr_Amy_Kankonen (2) Women’s History Month Luncheon

Bring your friends and join LCHS as we celebrate Women’s History Month as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, with a 1st person re-enactment of Dr. Amy Koukonen.  Just months after the 19th Amendment was passed, the progressive Dr. Kaukonen was elected mayor of Fairport Harbor – becoming one of the first female mayors in the United States. Her tenacious spirit and fearless work as a doctor and political reformist made her the female icon of social justice and change for which she is remembered today.

Top off the afternoon with a lunch of Chicken Marsala, try your luck at basket and 50/50 raffles, and great conversation. Doors open at 10 am with basket raffle and 50/50 raffle tickets available. The Lake County History Center provides rental space for groups and organizations that are looking for a unique location to hold their meeting, festival, or party. All rentals are under contract with rules in place to ensure the safety and preservation of our historic grounds, buildings, collections, and people. If you do not see an event you are attending at the History Center listed, it is more than likely a rental.
