This past Sunday, we were honored to be welcomed in to Penitentiary Glen’s Earth Day celebration. We had approached them with a rather different partnership – our very own family tree to celebrate the occasion.
We asked people to contribute their own leaf to our Lake County Genealogy Tree. They were asked to write their name, a memory or person in their ancestry they wanted to recognize, a memory if they wanted, and any other fun facts. The responses we received far exceeded our expectations. We learned that Jimmy’s grandparents in Colorado shoot bears, we met families from Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Yugoslavia, and many others, we traced one family’s lineage back to Lithuania through maternal ancestors, and we found out that Lake County has many Best Dads/Moms/Grandparents EVER.
Over the course of four hours, we had over 200 people participate in our Lake County Genealogy Tree. In fact, we ran out of leaves 3/4 of the way in! We are so thankful to everyone that participated and look to continue this fun exhibit through the year. Look for it throughout the summer at Farmer’s Markets, events, and in the History Center!
